Annacurra man Martin Fitzgerald was elected as the next Chairman of Wicklow GAA at Mondays convention after he seen off the challenge of former Chairman Bobby Dignam from Rathnew. Dignam was seeking another stint in the top role having served as Chairman in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It is fitting reward for Fitzgerald after dedicating his life to Wicklow GAA.
He has served on many committees at county board level including as Vice Chairman for the past five years under outgoing Chairman Martin Coleman. He was also chairman of Coiste Na nÓg in that time. He has also served as chairman of the Annacurra club and a lifetime dream became a reality on Monday.
He was born in to the GAA and knew nothing other than spending weekends in Aughrim with his late father Kevin and worked even then on the scoreboard or whatever job was thrown his way. His mother was also a big GAA follower and always encouraged Martin and his interest in the GAA.
He looks forward to the challenge ahead with relish and the implementation of the review will come under his stewardship. He thanked his family, Trish, Michelle, James and Robert for all their support and asked all the clubs to continue to support him in his tenure.
