AGB Senior Ladies Cup Victory
AGB Senior Ladies took on a valiant Valleymount side in the final of the Cup Competition in a sunny Blessington on mid-summer’s day 2014. The game was played at a fast pace in very warm conditions. Arklow’s performance was below par in the opening half with Valleymount appearing to be the hungrier side. The teams were level at the break 4-3 to 3-6 with Valleymount surely the happier team having scored their third goal in the closing minute to draw level with a lacklustre Arklow side.
Eleven minutes into the second half disaster struck for AGB as two of their key players, team captain, Sue Tyrrell, and stalwart Caitriona Byrne collided and suffered head injuries. First Aid was administered by medics from both sides and later the girls were transferred by ambulance to hospital where they received further attention. AGB lifted their game immediately and Steph Martin gave them a five point lead with a super goal, their fifth of the match. Valleymount refused to surrender and piled on the pressure to come within two points of the holders in what was a very sporting and skilful encounter.
This was a day when the youngsters shone with great displays from Niamh Arthur, Katie Larkin, Ciara Forde, Annie Conroy and Aine O’Reilly from AGB. Rachael Byrne stepped up to the mark between the posts in the absence of the regular goalkeeper. Orla Hayes and Emer Curran also acquitted themselves well in this encounter. Amy Burke, Niamh Clarke, Niamh Reid and Katie Maguire were in top form for Valleymount. Emer Miley was outstanding in the Valleymount goal denying Arklow at least another four goals in the course of the game.
Eimear O’Brien accepted the trophy on behalf of AGB and thanked the Valleymount side for a very challenging and sporting game. She especially thanked the First Aiders who were so quick to help when the Arklow girls were injured; reminding us that player welfare is always top of the agenda in ladies football. Well done to all the players, mentors, match officials and the host club for the great afternoon of football that was served up to the loyal supporters who attended in such great numbers. Many had come to watch the championship encounter between Tinahely and Blessington which followed at 7pm, in which favourites Tinahely were convincing winners.
