The Presidency Seminars 2011-2018 Being Young and Irish

Uachtarán na hÉireann, Michael D Higgins is inviting young people aged 17 – 26 to share their vision for Ireland and their proposals for change. I attach a brochure below with more information on the initiative.Young Irish people at home and abroad are being asked to make submissions on three central questions:

  • What is your vision for Ireland?
  • What can young people do to achieve this?
  • What else needs to happen to achieve this vision?

I am writing to request that you might share this information with the young people associated with the GAA in Ireland and across the globe. Submissions can be made on line at

The deadline for submissions is 29 September 2012.  The results of the consultation will be presented at a national seminar in November with President Higgins and senior policy makers in the Áras. Download a copy of the brochure

Under 14 Football Championship

Ashford were defeated by Derry Gaels in Aughrim 4-11 to 5-7. Ashford were beaten with the last kick of the game, having staged an unbelievable come back in the second half. Ashford were behind by fourteen points at half time 3-7 to 0-2, in fact their performance was terrible missing good scoring opportunities and hitting the upright on three occasions. However the second half was different Ashford came to life and outscored their opponents 5-5 to 1-4. Ashford had to field without their influential star Ross Quinn who was injured. Adam Melia was Man of the Match, Adam gave an outstanding performance covering every part of the ground and scoring two goals in the process. He was well assisted by Cian Staunton, Donal Ring and Colm Copeland in defence while good performances were recorded in the second half from Thomas Kearns, Rian Sweetman Burke, Adam Whelan and Cormac Doyle.

Under 16 Football Championship

Ashford were schedule to play Fergal Og in the U16 Championship Football Championship in Ashford but a no show from Fergal Og should give Ashford the Walk Over and the points.

Helen Kearney

Paralympics star Helen Kearney received a rousing reception in her hometown of Dunlavin this afternoon.

Helen who brought home a silver medal and 2 bronze medals from the Paralympics in London, paraded through the packed town in a horse-drawn carriage. The local Dunlavin GAA grounds then hosted speeches and presentations to mark her fantastic achievement.

Well done Dunlavin GAA Club.

Ashford & Glenealy GAA Clubs Lotto, Jackpot €17,300

There was no winner of this week’s Ashford and Glenealy GAA Clubs Lotto Jackpot worth €17,000 (17/09/2012). Numbers drawn were 2, 17, 22, 28. However 17 people matched 3 numbers and shared €510. Wicklow GAA Coaching Workshop

Wicklow GAA Coaching Team will hold a Workshop in Hollywood GAA Club on Saturday 13th October from 11:00 – 12:30. The Course will be conducted by Sean Dempsey former Laoise Senior Football Manager and will focus on forward play using the County Under 14 Development Squad. This is an ideal opportunity for our Coaches to view new drills in operation. To book your place, contact Hugh Kenny 087 2718537 or any of the county coaches.

Intermediate Football Championship

Ashford without two of their influential players fought bravely in the Quarter Final of the Darcy Sand Intermediate Football Championship before losing out to the stronger more physical Aughrim side 0-13 to 0-7, the half time score was 0-9 to 0-4. After fifteen minutes the scores were level 0-3 each. The honours were shared between Wes Manning and Lee Kavanagh for Man of the Match, both ensured that the Aughrim scores would be kept to a minium. Will Hender Phillips kept a clean sheet and was responsible for an excellent save late in the game. Brian Fagan and Iarla O’Donnell played well in defence. Danny Kavanagh making his first start of the season for the Club showed up well and could be a key factor in the final two games of the season against Aughrim and Avondale. Scorers for Ashford were Aaron Nugent 0-3, David Dowling 0-1, Sean Doyle 0-1, David Nolan 0-1, Danny Kavanagh 0-1.
